Description This print shows a view on ten types of men from Venice, Genoa, Rome, and Padua, represented in two horizontal rows of five. From a series of costumes in European countries. On the first row, on the left, a Venetian senator wears a long overcoat with long, wide bell sleeves, a hood (?), and train, brocaded with a pattern of foliage, a long beard, and small hat. A Venetian lawyer, next to him, wears a similar dress, with a pattern of scattered stylized leaves on his robe. In the center, a Venetian procurator wears a long robe with long, wide sleeves, a band on his shoulder, and short hair and beard. Next to him is a Venetian merchant in mourning dress, wearing a short ruff, short cape with three stripes on the border and lined with a brocaded pattern of scrolling leaves, over a longer cloak also lined with the same pattern, and a long robe with braided fastenings. On the right, a Roman senator wears a beret, ruff, and long dobe with four braided fastenings and long puff sleeves with ruffled cuffs. On the second row, a Genovese senator in Liguria wears an ankle-length overcoat with long, wide sleeves, lined with a brocaded pattern with scrolling leaves, over a ruff and doublet with long sleeves with ruffled cuffs; he wears a beret and flat shoes, and carries a bag under his arms. Next to him is a senator from Padua, wearing an overcoat with long, wide bell sleeves with a brocaded pattern of scrolling leaves over a doublet, hose, stockings and flat shoes; he wears a beret and ruff. In the center is a university head from Padua, wearing a beret and an open overcoat with a brocaded pattern of scrolling leaves, over a ruff, a striped doublet and short, wide hose, stockings, and flat shoes. Next to him is a Venetian nobleman wearing a long overcoat with long, wide bell sleeves, trimmed with ermin, a long beard, and a scarf around his head. Finally, on the right, is a Venetian emperor, wearing a robe with long, wide bell sleeves, brocaded with a pattern of scrolling leaves with a ruff, under a sort of toga, a long beard, hat, and holding a scepter on his right hand. Reference: Hollstein 139. Biography engraver: Abraham de Bruyn (c. 1539, Antwerp ? 1587, Cologne?) was a Flemish engraver. He established himself at Cologne about the year 1577. He is ranked among the Little Masters, on account of his plates being usually very small. He engraved in the manner of Wierix, and worked entirely with the graver, in a neat and formal style, but his drawing is far from correct. It is believed that he worked also as a goldsmith. Among his portraits, and prints of small friezes of hunting, hawking which are esteemed for their neatness.
